Letter from the Dean
Urban Social Sciences: Research in Practice
Welcome to the first Winter issue of Dialogo, the magazine of the Division of the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago. This edition marks an expansion of our publication schedule, as we move from two issues a year to four. The new Winter (and Summer) issues will offer a focused look at a shared research topic across social science disciplines and, as we did with the Law and Social Sciences last fall, highlight projects and people across the division.
In this issue, we explore what contemporary urban social science research encompasses. As you’ll read, these four articles share perspectives across human development, economics, history, political science, psychology, and sociology. Whether through education practice and policy research, international research, or research examining the built environment and the role of nature in cities, our faculty are at the nexus of these complex social science challenges and recognized as leaders on campus, locally, regionally, and globally for their expertise on these key questions and solutions.
Looking back at the fall and winter quarters, we are pleased to see that both terms were productive and exciting for the division. Among many honors and achievements, Mark Berman and John Cacioppo were each recognized by the Association for Psychological Science, Faith Hillis received an NEH fellowship, Richard Payne won the 2018 World Award for Book of the year, Mauricio Tenorio received a Humbolt Research Award, and Raine Daston received a Dan David Prize. Inaugural seed grants were awarded by our new Social Science Research Center and the Center for International Social Science Research (CISSR) announced its newest cohort of faculty fellows.
I look forward to sharing the accomplishments of the coming quarter with you as well. On behalf of our faculty and students, I invite you stay in touch with our most recent news via our website and social media channels.
With best wishes,
Amanda Woodward
