In Memoriam: Jane Coulson, AB ‘38 (Art)
Life Member, Social Sciences Advisory Council
Jane Coulson, AB’38, passed on December 1, 2020, at the age of 103. Jane was connected to the University for many years. Both her parents graduated from the University of Chicago. Jane and her late husband, Mr. John S. Coulson (LAB'32, AB'36), and her late brother, Mr. George G. Rinder (LAB'37, MBA'42), were all deeply engaged alumni. They are survived by Jane and John's four daughters - Nancy, Jane, Ann, and Sara - all of whom are alumni of the College.
After graduating from the College in 1938, Jane went on to get a second degree in drawing and painting from the School of the Art Institute. She taught briefly at the University of Washington before returning to Chicago and raising four daughters. She returned to work when her youngest child left for college, and was an active volunteer for the University, serving on many reunion committees, including Chair of her 25th and 50th reunions.
As a Life Member of the Social Sciences Advisory Council, Jane supported the Dean’s Fund for the Social Sciences and the Graduate Fund for the Social Sciences for many years, ensuring the Division had the resources it needed to continually meet the evolving needs of its students, faculty, and broader community.
Jane’s years of loyal dedication were a tremendous gift to this institution, and her generosity will always be gratefully remembered. The Division is honored to serve as a steward of her enduring legacy.
