Member, Social Sciences Advisory Council

A resident of Andover, MA and Silver Lake, NH, Dr. Edward Nicholas Krapels, AM’74 passed away on September 25, 2020 due to complications associated with a lung transplant. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Emerson, and his sons, Benjamin and Samuel Krapels.

Ed was an exemplary alumnus of the Division of the Social Sciences, leveraging his AM in International Relations from the University of Chicago as well as his PhD from the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University to forge a successful career as an entrepreneur and energy markets expert. He was a tremendous benefactor of the Division who contributed invaluable insight as a member of the Council.

As a philanthropic leader, Ed made a lasting impact across the Division, particularly through his generous support of the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC). His commitment enabled EPIC to accelerate its mission to confront the global energy challenge by ensuring energy markets provide access to reliable, affordable energy needed for growth, while limiting emissions that cause climate change and damages to the environment. Ed further championed the Division through his loyal contributions to the Dean’s Fund for the Social Sciences, the Visiting Committee Fellowship, and the Graduate Fund for the Social Sciences, helping to ensure the Division had the crucial resources and flexibility it needs to sustain its position at the vanguard of inquiry and impact.

Ed’s years of steadfast dedication were a tremendous gift to this institution, and his generosity will always be gratefully remembered. The Division is honored to serve as a steward of his enduring legacy.
